Our 2018 Gamay is coming out of retirement to go head to head with its younger brother 2019 in our new Dukes Up! Gamay 2 pack.

This Gamay is among the only wines we've released two years in a row, made with grapes from the same vineyard (a stunning lakeview site in West Kelowna). This vineyard was ripped up and replanted for organic transition last year so it'll be a few more years before we expect to release Gamay from this site again.

The main difference in our winemaking approach between these two wines is the amount of stomping we performed on the grapes. In 2018, the fruit was super clean and we stomped just enough to release about 4-6 inches of juice at the bottom of the tank and then filled the tank with whole, intact grape bunches to ferment (a technique known as semi-carbonic maceration).

In 2019, the vineyard had some issues with sour rot (a fungus) due to rainy September weather, and we did not feel as confident in the ability of the fruit to ferment clean using the same process as in 2018. We decided to stomp more vigourously to release more juice and ensure no oxygen was in the fermenters (oxygen increases the likelihood of spoilage). The result: clean wines on all ferments. Hooray!

The 2019 Gamay has everything we liked about the 2018 – the bright, crunchy fruit, the savoury character, the searing acidity – but it is balanced by just a hint more tannin which we think bodes well for this wine and it’s longevity. That said, the 2018 Gamay is the first red wine we ever made, which is pretty special too.
