Syrah's spicy nature mimics that of Veruca herself. Unlike the previous bottling of Thus Spoke Veruca, this time round, there is no softening of her edges with the aromatics of Viognier. She is dark and brooding.

This darkness hits the palate with black plum and cherry, with cool tones of blueberry and lavender. Her smokiness comes from grilled meat on a BBQ, served with olive tapenade and the right amount of herbal punch. The tannins are powdery in nature, bringing forward the uncomplicated spice. This vintage Veruca appeals to those who prefer their wine with a defiant spirit.

Winemaker Notes

This is the second iteration of Thus Spoke Veruca, and we hope to be able to offer this wine every year thanks to our great relationship with the Sekhon family. The fruit source for this wine is now a certified organic vineyard in Osoyoos, lovingly farmed by multiple generations of the Sekhons. The vision we have for Thus Spoke Veruca is to be the “impatient” wine, which will see only a short stay in barrel and be focused on purity of fruit and primary flavours, to be enjoyed immediately upon release or in the first handful of years. It will be contrasted in future years with “Into the Darkest Wood”, a richer Syrah which will see a longer time in barrel.

In the 2022 vintage, the fruit for this wine teetered on the edge of the ripeness we needed. This was due in large part to a cold, wet spring, and the rather later ripening nature of Syrah. The grapes came in with outstanding natural acidity and rather low potential alcohol. To find balance in this wine, we employed whole cluster fermentation to build ample tannin. We also chaptalized for the first time ever. This traditional intervention (widely used in regions like Burgundy) uses an addition of fermentable sugar to increase the alcohol of the final product. In this case, we used a dose of sugar (18 g/L) to bump the alcohol by 1%. This additional body helps balance the pronounced acidity and gives us a wine that, with its whisps of sappy whole-cluster flavours, fondly brings to mind our crushable 2019 Gamay.

Cheers!
